Thanks for seeking out this little blurb about why I'm asking for your support.

When invited to join Team Grateful, it took me about 30 seconds to think it was a great idea. The team name came from a sticker made in memory of "The Great Rich Prohaska." Of course, I added "the great" because he was great in the hearts and minds of those who knew him. Rich participated in life. It did not pass him by. He shared his life with others and did it with a smile. Rich was grateful for each day. That is the challenge for each of us, no matter the circumstance.

With that in mind, I will try something new by participating in the Tour De Cure. I will ride the 200km with a smile and be grateful for every pedal stroke I make and kilometre I travel to support such a great cause.

Why is the BC Cancer Foundation a great cause? Take a moment to look up the statistics of being diagnosed with cancer. It may seem distant on a webpage, and many of us hold an underlying belief that "It won't happen to me." Surprise! It can, and it does. Think about your own life and those of your family and friends. How many have been affected by cancer, directly or indirectly? Have you been surprised by who has been diagnosed with cancer and caught yourself thinking, "Oh, they were so young, fit, healthy and active?"

Cancer is sneaky and pervasive, and I'm constantly amazed by how widespread it is. The more we know about it, the better. Hence, I believe cancer research is vital to understanding the disease progression, effective treatments, better and early diagnostic tests and prevention.

My motivation to join the event is to honour my friends and family who have died from cancer or have had to battle the disease. I will be thinking of each of them as I ride.

On a broader scope, I would like to support the greater community and ride for those taken from us by cancer, those currently fighting the disease and those who are now cancer-free or in remission but with whom cancer has left its fingerprints. I also ride for the families who share in the challenges.

I hope you will join me in supporting the BC Cancer Foundation and invest in the future by sponsoring my ride. If you wish to honour someone specifically with your donation, please add their name in the comment section and I will display their name on my helmet for the RIDE DE CURE.
Gratefully,
Penny
