This year, I will be riding over 200 km in two days to raise money for the BC Cancer Foundation through the Tour de Cure. I am dedicating this ride to someone who left a lasting impact on me after just one meeting. Casey Lucille Bourke, whom I met in Houston while she was undergoing treatment for metastatic melanoma, was a remarkable artist with a charismatic energy. She shared her journey with me in the pool, and I also had the chance to meet her amazing mother. We chatted for a while, got to know each other, and her presence was captivating. As I left the hotel the next day, she gave me a big hug, exchanged contact information, and suggested staying in touch, hoping our paths would cross again one day. We remained in contact through social media, and I witnessed her courageous battle against cancer.
Casey's advocacy as a Melanoma fighter and her unwavering spirit deeply inspired me. I treasure the memories of our conversations and messages in the following years. Every year after meeting Casey, I would message her during the Tour De Cure and would let her know I was thinking of her.
