Please Join Me in the Tour de Cure!
In August I will be embarking on another cycling challenge in the Tour de Cure presented by Wheaton Precious Metals, to help the BC Cancer Foundation continue in it's mission of conquering cancer.
This will be my twelfth ride in this event, now at the ripe age of 80 years. But I am not letting age stop me just yet. However, some things have changed. I am no longer riding on the road for two reasons: first the traffic here is getting so heavy that it poses a safety issue and secondly, I may not see all the road hazards due to the onset of macular degeneration. However, I am still riding my stationary bike and will have no problems completing the equivalent of 210 km at my usual pace. This format is encouraged by the organizers for participants who prefer not to ride on the road.
Riding a stationary bike is not nearly as enjoyable as battling the elements and enjoying the camaraderie of our team and other riders. So as a substitute, I have chosen to ride a stationary bike, with a very comfortable seat, in the gymnasium of a cruise ship, observing the North Sea and the wonders of the Norwegian fiords. (Yes, we will be on a cruise at that time). I hope that will help me pass the time as I peddle my way through the many kilometers on my own!
Well, I wont be on my own. I will be thinking of all my family and friends who have succumbed to this terrible disease, and those who are bravely fighting it. You my donors, will also be with me in spirit, providing me the motivate to cross the finish line.
Riding this distance will be hard, and it will be long, but it does not compare to the challenges of those coping with cancer. Funds raised through the Tour de Cure will support life-saving research and enhancements to care at BC cancer treatment facilities, bringing hope to cancer patients in British Columbia and around the world.
