I'm taking on the Tour de Cure
Held by Donna Brooks
Please support me in the Tour de Cure cycling fundraiser!
There are many worthwhile causes these days that people are campaigning for and asking for contributions. So why contribute to the BC Cancer Foundation? Why support me? Here's why:
The bad news is, cancer is the leading cause of death in Canada, and it is estimated that a staggering 43% of Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. That's almost half off the population.
But there is hope, a lot of hope, and so much research is happening right here in B.C. to fight cancer. For example, there is new and better screening for many types of cancers, so that the cancer can be caught at a very early stage; there is more advanced and targeted treatments where the treatments don't cause as many side effects; and there is so much research going in to developing new and better treatment.
How do I know? I was a nurse at the Kamloops Cancer clinic for 15 years. I saw first-hand the improvements made in cancer treatment. We have come a long way, but we're not there yet. And the BC Cancer Agency is at the forefront of cancer research and development.
So this August I will be embarking on a cycling challenge. For me this is a very personal vendetta against cancer. I have lost many family members, friends and colleagues, and too many patients to this disease. A year ago I lost my dear sister, Nancy, to kidney cancer. She and I were very close, and I miss her so much. Nancy participated in the Ride to Conquer Cancer numerous times herself! She is the one that inspired me, and made me believe that something can be done to help make a difference. So I get on my bicycle and pedal, and I believe that am making a difference by committing to participate in the Tour de Cure presented by Wheaton Precious Metals to help BC Cancer Foundation break down cancer.
It will be hard and it will be long, but it does not compare to the challenge of facing cancer. The ride is 100 km a day for two days, which is nothing compared to the impact that cancer has on people's lives.
Funds raised through the Tour de Cure will support life-saving research and enhancements to care at BC Cancer, bringing hope to cancer patients in British Columbia and making an impact around the world.
Please consider supporting me by making a gift today. Your donation will help me achieve my fundraising goal AND motivate me in this challenge!
