Detect Early - Manage Effectively - Save Lives
This will be Better Outcomes 2s thirteenth year riding towards a cure for cancer. Two oral pathology and oral medicine specialists at the B.C. Cancer Agency, Drs. Catherine Poh and Michele Williams started the team in the hope of taking a bite out of oral cancer. Michele lost her fight with cancer in 2015. We ride on in honour of all that she has done in the fight against cancer. It is because of these two strong women our team has a 2 in its name.
The money we raise goes to research done by the British Columbia Oral Cancer Research Prevention Programme (BCOCPP) headed by Dr.PamelaGardner. Since 1999, the BCOCPP has been committed to improving the prevention and treatment of oral cancer in British Columbia through a combination of research, clinical and community outreach activities. The BCOCPP is responsible for the only validated method for predicting the risk of oral cancer.
Oral cancer is a serious health problem with a high mortality rate, primarily due to late diagnosis. Approximately 1 in 800 British Columbians has a pre-cancerous area in the mouth that may lead to oral cancer. Early detection of those at risk of oral cancer will save lives.
All the difficulties we face in raising money and training for the upcoming Tour pale in comparison to the monstrous challenges of those facing cancer.
There is a long story behind the Batman theme for our team. Please reach out if you would like more details about our colourful history.
This is your opportunity to do something challenging and rewarding. Cancer doesnt stop, neither will we.
