Miss you, Mum
But hope will make thee young, for Hope and Youth
Are children of one mother, even Love.
-Percy Bysshe Shelley
Mum, you were my biggest supporter for all my endeavours, be they half-baked or not. I wish I was more like you. However, many tell me you did not pass on your dress sense to me. Thank you for being my superhero. As a tribute to you, I will match all donations to my 2022 Tour de Cure for the month of May.
Detect Early - Manage Early - Save Lives
I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you for the phenomenal support I have been so fortunate to receive from all of you. Be it the Ride to Conquer Cancer or the Tour de Cure, the money we raise goes to research done by the British Columbia Oral Cancer Research Prevention Programme (BCOCPP) headed by Dr. Pamela Gardner.
Imagine a world where patients with an oral lesion can learn their risk of oral cancer before they get the disease. Since 1999, the BCOCPP has been committed to improving the prevention and treatment of oral cancer in British Columbia through a combination of research, clinical and community outreach activities. The BCOCPP is responsible for the only validated method for predicting the risk of oral cancer.
Oral cancer is a serious health problem with a high mortality rate, primarily due to late diagnosis. Approximately 1 in 800 British Columbians has a pre-cancerous area in the mouth that may lead to oral cancer. The main research study of the BCOCPP has followed over 2,000 patients with oral cancer or precancer for more than 20 years. This work has led to the development of screening guidelines, technology to assess lesion risk and the development, and validation of markers to predict the outcome. Early detection of those at risk of oral cancer will save lives.
Please consider a donation to my 2022 Tour de Cure. This will be my eleventh year of riding towards a cure for cancer. Please join me in taking a big bite out of oral cancer. This cause was close to my mums heart and I ride on in honour of all the love she has given.
Youll Never Walk Alone,
